Lego has started using e-methanol to make over 90 products in a bid to cut its reliance on conventional fossil fuels. The toymaker, known for its children's plastic bricks, is using the low-carbon fuel for items like steering wheels, connectors, cross axles and Minifigure hands, according to Yahoo Finance. Lego made over 4 billion Minifigures since 1978, with current production figures much higher. The increased use of the renewable material comes from a 2023 partnership with Danish renewable energy producer European Energy and healthcare company Novo Nordisk. E-methanol is produced with renewable energy and recycled carbon dioxide to create a circular carbon economy. Lego spent five years testing, learning and scaling the sustainable liquid fuel before putting it into factory production. Embedding the new material into existing manufacturing infrastructure has been a complex journey with suppliers. The Danish retailer aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and reduce absolute carbon emissions by 37% by 2032 compared to a 2019 baseline. This lets the company increase recycled and renewable materials without compromising on safety, quality or durability. For your business, green supply chain shifts often start with giant brands before filtering down to everyday packaging and parts. At least your inventory does not take five years of testing just to snap together.
