Biopharmaceutical giant GSK is pumping more than $800 million into a brand-new manufacturing hub in Upper Merion Township, Pennsylvania. Construction on the massive site is scheduled to kick off in 2027, bringing commercial production, research, and advanced digital labs under one roof according to an announcement from Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. The project is set to create over 300 new jobs for engineers, scientists, and local workers. This marks the second major Pennsylvania investment for the drug maker since 2024, following an identical $800 million injection into its Lancaster County facility. Pennsylvania is quickly becoming a magnet for the pharmaceutical industry, drawing billions from major players. Indiana-based drug maker Eli Lilly is pouring $3.5 billion into a new manufacturing plant in Lehigh County that will add 850 permanent jobs and 2,000 construction posts. Meanwhile, New Jersey-based healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson is spending $1 billion on a cell therapy plant in Montgomery County for another 500 permanent roles. For local business owners, these mega-projects mean a massive influx of well-paid workers who will be buying local goods, renting homes, and eating in regional restaurants across the tri-state area. When pharmaceutical giants spend billions on brick-and-mortar factories, local contractors and suppliers often ride the wave right along with them.
