Target Corporation is a massive national retail chain that is heading into the critical holiday shopping season with strong momentum after a rough patch last year. The company is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and operates nearly 2,000 stores across the United States. In the second quarter of 2026, the company reported net sales of $26,500,000,000, which is a 5.3% increase compared to the same time last year. Comparable sales jumped 3.8% following a solid 6.7% net sales gain in the first quarter. Target Chief Executive Officer Michael Fiddelke took control of the company in February after longtime leader Brian Cornell stepped down. Mr. Fiddelke quickly launched a turnaround strategy to fix cluttered aisles, staffing shortages, and messy inventory. "Target's continued price investments reinforce our view that management is making the right decisions for the customer and the business," Jefferies analysts said in an emailed note. The retailer slashed prices on apparel and home goods in September to win over budget-conscious shoppers. Chief Merchandising Officer Cara Sylvester also brought in a refreshed team of senior vice presidents in May to overhaul holiday displays and gifting items. GlobalData Managing Director Neil Saunders noted that last year the retailer lacked confidence and struggled to keep shelves stocked. This year, the business is rolling out new beauty store sections and bringing back partnerships with designer Isaac Mizrahi. Here is what this means for you as a business owner and shopper. When a retail giant like Target slashes prices and cleans up its supply chain, smaller local stores often have to sharpen their own promotions to stay competitive on the block. You will likely see much heavier holiday discounting and aggressive ad campaigns everywhere you look this winter. Even if you sell kosher groceries or run an office supply shop, keeping an eye on how the big boxes manage their supply chains can teach you a lot about fixing your own inventory bottlenecks. Target still has to prove it can keep store shelves fully stocked during the peak December rush without running out of popular items. Hopefully, your own holiday sales will ring up just as fast as their online marketplace orders.
