Meta ordered to pay $25 billion penalty in New Mexico
Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, was just hit with a $25 billion court penalty in New Mexico. That is far beyond pocket change, even for tech royalty: the fine equals about 40% of Meta's total income for 2025.
Lawyers had previously argued the punishment should not exceed $3.4 billion. Meta immediately called the decision unconstitutional. Meanwhile, a separate case over child safety and mental health added another $942 million in penalties and remedies.
As the clip notes, "the rules need to adjust not even with just social media and online, but also AI now at play here". That is one bill you cannot just click to ignore.
