Elon Musk is betting that your next Mobile carrier will be in space. SpaceX, the rocket company that already runs the Starlink internet service, just announced plans to become a major Mobile carrier in the United States. They are upgrading their satellite network to send signals directly to your existing iPhone or Android device. The big hurdle has always been signal strength inside buildings. SpaceX says they have solved this by adding a new low-band spectrum that cuts through walls and concrete. This means you could potentially get a signal in a basement or a warehouse where you usually have zero bars. The Federal Communications Commission, the government agency that regulates airwaves, has already approved 15,000 new satellites for this project. These new V2 satellites are designed to deliver 100 times more bandwidth than the ones currently in orbit. This is not just for remote areas anymore. If the final permits go through, SpaceX will combine these satellites with ground stations to create a massive, flexible network. For your business, this could mean a cheaper alternative to the big carriers like Verizon or AT&T. You might soon be able to keep your devices connected without worrying about which tower is closest to your shop. If this works, you will never have to worry about a dead zone in your office again. It is a long way from launching rockets to fixing your dropped calls, but that is exactly where the industry is heading.
