Tesla vehicles power homes
Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y cars can back up homes. They work with Powerwall 3 batteries.
A new Tesla feature lets cars power homes. Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles can now provide home backup energy with the Powerwall 3 home battery. This means customers can draw power directly from their vehicles to power their homes, giving them an extra two days of backup power. The Powershare Home Backup program was previously only available to Cybertruck owners, but now Model 3 and Model Y owners can also use it. To use this feature, customers need a Powerwall 3, a Wall Connector 3, and a Model 3 or Model Y bought after October 1, 2026. Tesla's Senior Director of Residential Energy, Colby Hastings, says this feature makes Tesla vehicles a good investment for home energy resilience. The feature can be enabled without extra hardware or electrical work for new installations, and existing installations can be enabled remotely in most cases. This is a big deal for homeowners who want backup power during outages. It's like having a generator, but instead of gas, it runs on your car's battery. For business owners, this means less downtime during power outages, which can save them money. And with the rising cost of energy, any way to save money is a welcome change. As Colby Hastings said, 'Our vehicles and Powerwall are even better when used together – each increases the value of the other.'
