Airbnb boss Brian Chesky warns pure managers and rigid workers won’t survive AI

Brian Chesky runs Airbnb, the short-term rental giant.

The short version

  • He says pure people managers have no future value.
  • Bosses must now stay hands-on with actual work.
  • Workers who refuse to change will also fall behind.

Brian Chesky, the head of Airbnb, says two types of professionals will not survive the age of artificial intelligence. According to Fortune, the $103 billion rental company boss warns that pure people managers and workers who resist change are at the highest risk.

Speaking on a podcast, Chesky explained that every higher-up must now become a hybrid manager who stays deeply involved in the actual work. You cannot simply act as a therapist or run meetings all day. He pointed to former Apple chief design officer Jony Ive as the right example of balancing product design with team leadership.

Meanwhile, Jensen Huang, the head of the $5.23 trillion chipmaker Nvidia, issued a similar warning at a conference. Huang says workers will not lose their jobs to AI itself, but to someone who uses AI. Ted Sarandos, the co-CEO of streaming giant Netflix, agrees that creatives who lean into the technology will outpace those who ignore it.

Chesky added that mastering these new tools is simple for anyone with a growth mindset. For your own business or team, it means the people running your operations must understand the daily details, not just supervise from a distance.
