Elon Musk could get $110 billion richer from a Tesla and SpaceX merger

Elon Musk could gain over $110 billion from a Tesla and SpaceX merger.

The short version

  • Special committees are examining the possible deal now.
  • Musk could unlock 286 million shares ahead of schedule.
  • The final terms are not decided yet.

Why it matters to you. For your business, big corporate combinations often signal major shifts in how top suppliers and technology markets operate.

Elon Musk, the head of Tesla and SpaceX, could become another $110 billion richer if a massive merger goes through between his electric car maker and his rocket company. Bloomberg calculated that the deal could hand the entrepreneur 286 million Tesla shares ahead of their 2018 schedule, according to UNN.

Musk confirmed that both companies had set up special committees to examine the idea. A change of control in the merger could let him receive and sell those shares before the current 2028 deadline. Another potential source of profit sits in his 2025 compensation package, which could approach $1 trillion in maximum value.

If Tesla is valued at $2 trillion in the transaction, he could get over $6 billion in additional shares. No final decision has been made yet, and the two companies are only studying the possibility. Sometimes the biggest fortunes grow quietly on paper long before the ink dries.
