Tesla cuts its spending plan by over $5 billion for 2026

Tesla just trimmed its 2026 spending forecast down to $20 billion.

The short version

  • Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja announced the five billion dollar drop on an earnings call.
  • The electric vehicle maker insists its artificial intelligence plans are not slowing down.

Tesla just surprised investors by cutting its planned spending for 2026 by more than $5 billion. According to The Motley Fool, the electric vehicle maker lowered its capital expenditure forecast from over $25 billion down to approximately $20 billion. The move comes as Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja shared the numbers on a third-quarter earnings call.

Unlike massive cloud computing companies, Tesla does not need to build giant data centers to compete with Amazon, Alphabet, which owns Google, and Microsoft. While Alphabet raised its 2026 spending forecast to $200 billion and Amazon increased its plans to $220 billion, Tesla has a completely different business model.

Elon Musk's company is pouring money into Full Self-Driving technology, the Cybercab robotaxi program, and Optimus humanoid robots instead of selling cloud computing capacity. Tesla posted $28.05 billion in revenue for the third quarter, with automotive revenue dropping three percent and operating margins narrowing from 5.8 percent to 2.6 percent.

Even with tighter margins, Tesla generated $1.53 billion in free cash flow and ended September with over $45 billion in cash and investments. Management says the budget reduction is about the timing of investments rather than a lack of ambition. Cutting back on unneeded spending gives the company more financial flexibility to build its autonomous future without wasting capital on empty data warehouses.
