Airbnb bans hosts from making guests strip beds and wash dishes

Airbnb just banned hosts from forcing guests to do heavy chores.

The short version

  • The new policy covers every booking made on or after November 20, 2026.
  • Furious hosts are now threatening boycotts and higher cleaning fees.
  • Lighter requests like gathering towels are still allowed.

Pack your bags without the sponge. Airbnb, the online vacation rental platform, just banned hosts from making guests strip beds, take out trash, or wash dishes before leaving. The new rules target reservations booked on or after November 20, 2026.

The change arrives after years of traveler complaints about paying hefty cleaning fees only to face long chore lists at checkout. Under the updated policy, hosts can no longer demand tasks that require significant effort or cleaner duties. Instead, hosts choose from seven standard house rules like quiet hours and pet limits, while dish washing and trash duties become optional requests.

Lighter tasks like gathering towels remain allowed, and local rules like bear-proof trash bins can still apply. The backlash from property owners was immediate. A petition on Change.org urging Airbnb to reverse the restriction quickly topped 10,000 signatures.

Some angry hosts are planning a booking blackout on November 20 by closing their calendars, while others threaten to leave the platform or raise prices. Airbnb does not cap cleaning fees, leaving room for costs to shift. Travelers have mostly cheered the update, saying high fees should cover the cleanup. For your next family trip or getaway, you can finally leave the dish soap behind.
