The short version

  • The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program covers winter bills.
  • Benefits usually range from $200 to $1,500 per season.
  • Apply early through your local office because funds fill fast.

Winter heating bills are on the way, and help is available for families struggling with utility costs. According to Propel, applications for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as LIHEAP or HEAP, are opening for the 2026-2027 season. Each state runs its own version of the program, with benefits typically ranging from $200 to $1,500 per season, though some crisis payments go higher.

Most states set the income limit at 60 percent of the state median income or use federal poverty guidelines. For example, in states using 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, the limit for a household of four is $49,500 a year.

After approval, the program pays your utility company directly, sends you a check if heat is in your rent, or covers deliverable fuels like oil and propane. Because the program often fills up fast, officials advise applying as soon as your state portal or local community action agency opens up.

Keep paying your bills while your application is reviewed, and contact your utility company immediately if you are facing a shutoff. Check with your state energy assistance office for specific deadlines and local rules.
