Kellogg's changes UK Rice Krispies recipe as weather disrupts grain supplies

Kellogg's, the cereal giant, is changing its UK Rice Krispies recipe.

The short version

  • Whole Rice grains are out, replaced by corn flour and Rice flour.
  • Fans complain the famous crunch and pop are now missing.
  • US and Canadian products are not affected by this change.

Pour a bowl in London today, and you might notice something missing. Kellogg's, the cereal giant, just dropped whole Rice grains from its UK Rice Krispies and Coco Pops, switching the tiny toasted puffs to a mix of corn flour and Rice flour.

According to the BBC, changing weather conditions and droughts in Asia have disrupted supplies of rice, forcing the recipe shift. Fans have taken online to complain that the cereal no longer makes its famous snap, crackle and pop sound, while new labels now warn that the boxes contain wheat gluten.

The recipe changes are staying across the Atlantic for now, with no changes made to Rice Krispies products in the US and Canada. Extreme weather is reaching right into the cereal aisle, proving that even a breakfast staple can get caught in a crop shortage. Next time you grab an imported box, check the back before you pour.
