S&P 500 sits 3.6% below record high as annual Santa Claus rally approaches

The S&P 500 sits 3.6 percent below its peak.

The short version

  • It gave back two percent over the past week.
  • The seasonal rally window is still seven weeks away.
  • History shows the index gains in about 75 percent of these periods.
  • That is a tilt in the odds, not a guarantee.

The S&P 500, the index tracking five hundred of America's largest publicly traded companies, sits at 7,562.35 as it enters a crucial stretch. That is about 3.6 percent below its 52-week high after giving back 2.08 percent over the past week, according to Yahoo Finance.

The famous Santa Claus rally window is still seven weeks away. It covers the final five trading days of December plus the first two of January. Katie Stockton, the founder of Fairlead Strategies, noted that year-end timing can shift when seasonal strength actually hits.

History shows the index has been positive in this window in roughly 75 percent of years since the 1950s, posting average gains of about 1.4 percent. But the pattern is far from foolproof. The rally missed its mark in 2024, when the index returned -0.9 percent over the same window.

Fourth quarters have historically been the strongest period for stocks, rising about 80 percent of the time with November and December doing the heavy lifting. Year-end liquidity is thin, which tends to exaggerate price moves in both directions. The seasonal edge can be wiped out instantly by a macro surprise, just as it was in 2022.

For your portfolio, earnings, Federal Reserve policy, and interest rates will matter far more than what the calendar says. Do not bet the store on a seasonal calendar alone.
