Apple is preparing to release its first touchscreen MacBook Pro as soon as October

Apple could launch touchscreen MacBook Pro models as soon as October.

The short version

  • The new laptops are expected to feature touch-enabled OLED screens.
  • Apple resisted touchscreen Macs for sixteen years before this change.
  • The new models may occupy a more expensive tier above regular laptops.

Apple, the consumer electronics giant, could introduce its first touchscreen MacBook Pro as soon as October, putting a much tighter timeline on one of the biggest changes coming to the Mac in years, according to Gotechtor. The new 14-inch and 16-inch models are expected to feature touch-enabled OLED displays, with a November launch still possible if Apple’s plans slip.

The laptops are already being tested internally with macOS 27.2, which is currently in beta and expected to be released later this month. That makes an October introduction increasingly plausible and suggests Apple is preparing the hardware and software together rather than simply adding touch support to an existing MacBook Pro.

The display isn’t the only major change, as Apple is expected to replace the current mini-LED display with OLED, bringing deeper blacks and higher contrast while adding direct touch input to macOS for the first time on a Mac. The laptops are also expected to feature a thinner design and replace the familiar display notch with a smaller Dynamic Island-style cutout.

Apple has spent years resisting the idea of touchscreen Macs, even as Windows laptops increasingly adopted touch displays, so the change would mark a significant reversal for the MacBook Pro. Exactly how Apple adapts macOS for touch remains one of the biggest unanswered questions.

The new machines are expected to use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips rather than introduce another processor generation alongside the display overhaul. Apple may position the touchscreen models above the regular MacBook Pro lineup, raising the possibility that the OLED touchscreen version will occupy a more expensive tier.
