SpaceX closes $40 billion debt deal for AI chips, Elon Musk says

Elon Musk just secured forty billion dollars in debt.

The short version

  • SpaceX will use the funds to buy artificial intelligence chips.
  • The money arrives in early twenty twenty seven.
  • Starlink revenue keeps the credit rating high.

Elon Musk just announced that SpaceX has closed forty billion dollars in debt financing to purchase specialized computer chips. The massive funding deal, revealed by the billionaire on Sunday, will buy graphics processing units to power the company's artificial intelligence systems. According to CNBC, the financing primarily consists of callable debt and is expected to arrive in the first and second quarters of twenty twenty seven.

SpaceX, the private rocket and satellite company, is using the cash to feed the enormous capital requirements of the artificial intelligence boom. Goldman Sachs, the giant Wall Street investment bank, led talks with investors including Apollo Global Management, the massive private equity firm, over the financing structure.

The deal uses a special vehicle to keep the debt off the balance sheet and preserve the company's investment-grade credit ratings. SpaceX has expanded aggressively into artificial intelligence this year, referring to the unit as Super Intelligence, or SI. The segment has quickly become the company's largest business unit, with third-quarter revenue surging ninefold to seven billion five hundred sixty million dollars from eight hundred thirteen million dollars a year earlier.

Musk also noted that debt markets have largely shut off access for companies without substantial revenue outside artificial intelligence. For your own business loans and credit lines, lenders are looking at hard revenue before they hand over cash. That is forty billion reasons why even rockets need a rock-solid balance sheet.
