Fannie Mae net income rises to $4.2B in Q3 2026

Fannie Mae reported $4.2 billion in net income for the third quarter.

The short version

  • The mortgage giant set its net worth at $119.6 billion.
  • Higher interest income helped offset a credit-loss provision of $1.1 billion.
  • The company provided $103 billion in mortgage-market liquidity during the quarter.

Fannie Mae, the government-backed mortgage giant that buys home loans from banks, just reported $4.2 billion in net income for the third quarter of 2026. That is up 5% from the previous quarter, according to HousingWire. Fannie Mae's total net worth reached $119.6 billion as of Sept. 30.

Bill Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and chairman of Fannie Mae's board, said the strong performance is delivering for homeowners. During the quarter, Fannie Mae provided $103 billion in liquidity to the mortgage market. That money supported about 194,000 home purchases, 66,000 refinancings and 96,000 rental units.

Nearly 103,000 first-time homebuyers bought homes through these acquisitions. But the company also set aside a $1.1 billion provision for credit losses, more than double the $485 million from the previous quarter. Chryssa Halley, the chief financial officer of Fannie Mae, explained that rising interest rates increased expected credit losses and put pressure on multifamily property values.

Even with those rising credit reserves, the company grew net income and cut its regulatory capital deficit. For anyone shopping for a home or paying a mortgage, the giant backer keeps money flowing to lenders so mortgages stay available across the country.
