Jensen Huang compares artificial intelligence to a five-layer cake and maps Bitcoin

Jensen Huang, the head of Nvidia, calls artificial intelligence a five-layer stack.

The short version

  • The bottom layer is energy, while the top layer runs applications.
  • Bitcoin shares a similar five-layer structure from proof-of-work up to apps.
  • Autonomous AI systems may soon need Bitcoin to verify what they did.

Why it matters to you. For your business, this convergence points to a future where automated software and digital ledgers work hand in hand to track transactions and verify digital records securely.

Jensen Huang, the head of Nvidia, says artificial intelligence is built like a five-layer cake running from energy at the bottom to applications at the top. Huang, who leads the Silicon Valley chip designer making processors for artificial intelligence, explained the model in a company blog post.

According to CoinGeek, Bitcoin can be understood in much the same way, with each layer depending entirely on the ones beneath it. At the bottom of both systems is physical energy. Nvidia, the chip maker powering massive data centers, relies on electricity to drive specialized processors capable of massive parallel computations.

Those chips are then assembled into data centers that Huang calls AI factories, supporting models and applications above them. Bitcoin can also be divided roughly into five layers, starting with proof-of-work, moving through the node network and shared blockchain, and ending with transactions and applications.

While artificial intelligence generates intelligence, Bitcoin generates something autonomous systems increasingly need: independently verifiable evidence of what happened. Autonomous AI agents are beginning to log in to systems, call application programming interfaces, authorize transactions, and spend money within delegated limits. This creates a growing need for honest answers about who acted and on whose authority.

Bitcoin converts computation and transactions into a shared record that independent parties can verify without trusting a middleman.

It is a long way from the power plant to the autonomous agent, but the stack starts in the same place.
